As one of the premier bariatric surgeons in the New York and Tri-State Area and the Director of The Center for Bariatric Surgical Specialties, Dr. Alan Geiss has performed over 3,000 surgeries involving the LAP-BAND® System. His extensive experience with laparoscopic surgery and techniques such as the LAP-BAND® System have made Dr. Geiss and our center a top choice for patients seeking weight loss surgery.
Dr. Alan Geiss was born in New York, New York. He graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree from Alfred University and continued his education at Chicago Medical School, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1970.
Dr. Geiss is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He did his surgical training at the Albert Einstein Medical Center and the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He furthered his surgical prowess by completing numerous specialized bariatric surgical training courses at various world centers both in the United States and abroad.
Dr. Geiss is the Director of the Laparoscopic Bariatric Center
at Syosset Hospital, the Center for Surgical Specialties, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. His practice specializes in Laparoscopic Bariatric surgical placement of the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band. He has the largest Laparoscopic Bariatric surgical practice within the North Shore-LIJ Health System and on all of Long Island and one of the largest practices in the country.
Dr.Geiss is a member of numerous medical and surgical societies including the Fellows of the American College of Surgeons, the New York Medical Society, the Surgical Society of Alimentary Tract Surgeons, the Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Society for American Gastroendoscopic Surgery, and the Society for Laparoendoscopic Surgery. He is published in numerous scientific peer reviewed surgical journals including the Annals of Surgery, Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, Obesity Surgery and Surgical Endoscopy. Dr. Geiss has also presented his work at many national surgical meetings.

Dr. Colin Powers , one of the distinguished bariatric surgeons at our Long Island, New York facility, maintains a practice focused on minimally-invasive abdominal surgery. This includes the LAP-BAND® System for weight loss.
As an attending surgeon at The Center for Bariatric Surgical Specialties, Dr. Powers is an active member of the bariatric staff and committees pertaining to bariatric surgery for the North Shore-LIJ Health System. He also has a practice that is directed to individual and personalized care for all his patients. He works closely with our other LAP-BAND® System surgeon, Dr. Alan Geiss, to advance the largest and most experienced LAP-BAND® System program on Long Island.
Dr. Powers is originally from Western New York, and attended the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He completed a general surgery residency program as the Chief Resident in 2003, then went on to complete a laparoscopic fellowship, established by Dr. Geiss, within the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
Dr. Powers has been published in numerous journals, including Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, Surgical Endoscopy, and Obesity Surgery.
Dr. Powers is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. His other professional memberships include the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASBS), the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS).
Dr. Lester Cooperstone was born in Brooklyn, NY and received a B.A. in Biological Sciences from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1978. He attended medical school at New York University School of Medicine, and received his M.D. in 1982. After completion of a residency in General Surgery at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1987, he became Board Certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery in 1988 and subsequently a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.) in 1990. Since then he was recertified by the American Board of Surgery in 1998 and again 2008.
Dr. Cooperstone began his interest in bariatric surgery after the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Development Conference in 1991 confirmed the benefit and effectiveness of surgery to treat patients with morbid obesity. This led him to Iowa where he took a preceptorship with Dr. Edward Mason, considered to be the “father of bariatric surgery”. He continued his training with Dr. Rafael Capella, one of the pioneers of gastric bypass surgery. He then introduced the Banded Gastric Bypass to Syosset Hospital in 2000 where he has achieved a long record of safety and success helping patients to achieve their goals.
The advances and refinements of the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure have now led Dr. Cooperstone to work with and learn from Dr. Alan Geiss, who has vast experience in laparoscopic surgery and lap-band procedures. The laparoscopic gastric banding procedure will add to Dr. Cooperstone’s armamentarium in the care of severely obese patients.
Baiju C. Gohil, MD, FACS received his medical degree from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He completed his general surgery residency at Downstate Medical Center as well, and became chief resident. Dr. Gohil completed further training in a laparoscopic and bariatric surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the pioneering institutions for bariatric surgery. With a keen interest in the advancement of bariatric surgery and newer minimally invasive surgical techniques, Dr. Gohil brings additional state-of-the-art practices to the Center for Bariatric Surgical Specialties at Syosset Hospital. He has studied obesity as a disease and has published multiple articles. Dr. Gohil is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and performs general surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery, minimally invasive weight loss surgery including the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, as well as, advanced endolumenal therapies.
