"My name is AnneMarie, I had LAP-BAND® System surgery with Dr. Geiss on November 1, 2005. From my heaviest weight until now, I have lost approximately 95 pounds. It has been a positive experience since the time I decided to have the surgery, and every day thereafter.
If I could give anyone who is deciding to have the surgery some advice, it would be to understand that this is a life-long commitment and change in old habits. It is not a foolproof plan to lose weight. It's a combination of wanting to lose the weight and understanding that it is a change for the better.
Some of the challenges that I've had to face are not having carbonated beverages (you'd be surprised what you can drink that doesn't have carbonation), eating smaller portions, which really isn't that hard to do once you've had the surgery, cutting your food into small pieces, and choosing the order of importance in which to eat the food. For example: I would eat my protein first, then vegetables or salad, and then a small amount of a starch. You have to remember there isn't much room in the pouch, so you have to choose your food wisely. When we go out to a restaurant, I always ask for a smaller dish because I know I will never be able to finish my dinner in the portion size it comes in. Now, there are always "doggy bags" that always come home with me. Always drink before your meal and not with your meal. When you're feeling hungry, chug down some water to fill the pouch, it really works…
Dr. Geiss and his staff are here to help us through the hard times we may encounter. If you pay attention to what they tell you, you will definitely succeed. I have to say the best part of the whole experience is now when I go shopping. I never thought I would be able to shop in a ‘normal’ store. It's a great feeling!"
Sometimes life gives you a second chance. Three years ago I was lucky to get one.
After trying almost every diet ever known to man and not being successful on many of them, I knew that I needed something else. I was determined to find an answer, someone or something that would help me along the way. I made a life changing choice and made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Geiss’ office and my journey began.
After meeting with the staff at Dr. Geiss’ office I knew one of my prayers was answered. There was help for me. Lap band surgery could be my salvation.
That was my first step on a life long journey for weight loss. I am thankful every day that I had this procedure done. This “tool” has helped me put food in a different category. I am now able to control the amount of food that I eat every day. I stop and think about what I am eating and for the first time in my life I don’t eat just for the sake of eating.
As I have been doing this for some time now, I must admit it is not an easy journey. Something might tempt you when you are on a regular weight loss diet. You might fall off the wagon and give in to the temptation. Well, there are some foods that I would love to eat once again; some foods that still tempt me. However, I can’t just give in to the temptation. This is the tough part. You new way of life is just that. You will find some food that you just can’t eat any longer no matter how many times you try.
There are a lot of tradeoffs in life and it’s up to you to decide what is important. Having lap band surgery has changed my life for the better. I am on a regular exercise schedule which has not only changed the shape of my body but also my outlook toward my job. I don’t feel the stress attached to my job in quite the same way. I am able to cope with the demand easily now. The stress is still there but the way that I deal with it is different. Just as I deal with my food issues in a different way now.
My best suggestion to someone who is considering this procedure is to make sure that you are going to do this for the RIGHT reasons – not looking for a quick fix but a life long change to a happy and healthier life. Good luck on your journey.
